Gonzaga's nursing programs for Washington residents
Washington is Gonzaga's home state, and that shapes almost every part of an NP practicum here: the board rule behind the three points of contact, CPNW clearance, and clinical faculty who come to your clinic. Every Gonzaga program now admitting students is open to Washington residents, and the MSN practicums happen at approved Washington sites. Here is what that means from Puget Sound to the Inland Northwest.

Which Gonzaga programs a Washington resident can join
Washington residents can apply to every graduate nursing program Gonzaga is currently admitting, and to the two bachelor's programs taught on the Spokane campus. For the nurse practitioner tracks, residence counts twice: it makes you eligible, and your license then sets where the practicum happens.

Master's-prepared nurses weighing the Post-Master's DNP follow a different track: the hours are project work with an agency liaison, and they may sit inside your own organization as long as they fall outside the area where you work and outside paid time.
What home-state status gives you
Gonzaga is a Washington program on WABON's approved in-state list, and that matters more than it sounds. Distance programs based elsewhere need WABON approval under WAC 246-840-571 before placing anyone in Washington, and WABON authorizes those placements for Washington residents only. Gonzaga sits outside that rule and follows the in-state education rules instead.
The competition is still real. The Washington Center for Nursing counted 250 out-of-state programs placing 1,860 students in Washington in 2023-24, most of them graduate programs, on top of in-state NP programs at WSU, UW, Seattle University and Pacific Lutheran. Your likely preceptor is fielding requests from other schools, so a complete request that arrives early carries weight.
The second advantage is the visit. Washington is inside Gonzaga's four-state region, so clinical faculty come to your clinic in every practicum course and no extra Spokane day is needed. Gonzaga's clinical faculty keep unencumbered Washington RN and ARNP licenses on file, per the WAC. The faculty site visits page shows how to host one.
The board, the compact and full practice
The Washington State Board of Nursing licenses you and approves Gonzaga's programs. It has used the WABON name since July 24, 2023, when Washington joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, having previously been the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission. NCSBN's table dates full implementation of the compact to January 31, 2024, so a multistate Washington RN license now carries a practice privilege into Idaho, Montana and the other compact states among Gonzaga's ten. Oregon, California, Nevada and Alaska remain outside it.
AANP classes Washington as a full practice state, which puts NP-owned primary care and psychiatric practices on your map. The protected title stays ARNP until June 30, 2027, when House Bill 2416 makes it APRN; until that date, legal documents use ARNP. WAC 246-840-533 inside your practicum
One Washington rule runs through every Gonzaga practicum, wherever in the ten states it takes place. Gonzaga's FNP Clinical Faculty Packet cites WAC 246-840-533, which has nursing faculty hold a joint conference with the student and each primary preceptor at the start, middle and end of the learning experience. Gonzaga calls these the three points of contact and puts you in charge of arranging them.
- Start of the semesterA brief phone or video call linking you, the preceptor and the clinical faculty member to go over the goals you set.
- Mid-semesterThe faculty visit at your Washington clinic. For FNP students it is in person, with at least three or four patients and grading on the OSCE rubric; PMHNP students may be observed by telehealth.
- End of the semesterYour preceptor completes the evaluation with you, and its feedback shapes next semester's goals.
The same rule caps each preceptor at two students at once and excludes immediate family or any tie that could cloud an impartial evaluation. A preceptor who already hosts a student from another school may be at that limit, so ask about it in your first conversation. A WABON rulemaking notice from December 2025 could reshape these sections; the three points of contact page follows how Gonzaga applies them today.
CPNW and the systems that host NP students
Hours start counting only once three things line up: you are following CPNW, faculty have approved the site, and Gonzaga has confirmed an active affiliation agreement. CPNW, Clinical Placements Northwest, is a nonprofit serving Washington and Northern Idaho with 19 healthcare partners and 33 partners in education, and Gonzaga appears on its list of participating programs. CPNW clearance covers the passport itself.
Examples of Washington systems by region (possible settings, not a list of Gonzaga sites)
- Spokane and the Inland Northwest: Providence Sacred Heart and Holy Family, where a Clinical Education Agreement comes first and a Professional Development Coordinator arranges rotations; MultiCare Deaconess and Valley; CHAS Health; and VA Spokane, which trains students only under a VA academic affiliation.
- Puget Sound: Providence Swedish, UW Medicine, MultiCare in Tacoma, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and Kaiser Permanente Washington, whose nursing placement requests follow an annual cycle.
- Southeast Washington: Providence's Kadlec and St. Mary, reached through their own student portal.
- Southwest Washington: Legacy Health and PeaceHealth Southwest around Vancouver.
- Rural Washington: the critical access hospitals on the Department of Health's list, each running its own affiliation process.
The pattern holds statewide: a clinician's yes opens the conversation, and a school-level agreement closes it. City-by-city detail lives on Spokane NP preceptors and Washington NP preceptors.
Shortage figures behind the search
HRSA's quarterly summary for June 30, 2026 shows how thin coverage runs. Washington has 243 mental health shortage areas in which only about 21% of need is met, a lower share than Idaho, Oregon, Montana or Alaska, and closing the gap would take 249 more practitioners. Primary care fares better but is still short: 260 designated areas, about 42% of need met and 975 practitioners missing.
For a PMHNP student that cuts both ways. Demand is obvious, yet psychiatric clinicians carry heavy loads, so widen the list to Eastern State and Western State Hospitals, both CPNW partners, VA Spokane with its mental health NP residency, and community behavioral health programs. NP jobs keep growing as well. The Washington Center for Nursing counted about 4,560 NP jobs in 2023, up nearly 18% since 2019, roughly 400 of them in the Spokane-Spokane Valley metro and 2,700 around Seattle, Tacoma and Bellevue, with state projections reaching 6,022 by 2032. The same center reports that 86% of non-rural nursing schools call their clinical sites inadequate.
The state preceptor grant and Gonzaga's thanks
Washington gives nurse preceptors one more reason to say yes. Under the Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant, set up by the legislature and administered by WABON, the eligible preceptors are nurses: LPNs, RNs and ARNPs who satisfy the state's preceptor rule, bring a year of experience and are employed where an approved Washington program holds an affiliation agreement. Qualifying precepting means at least 80 hours with one student. Physicians and PAs sit outside it, and so do out-of-state programs, even for hours logged in Washington.
An ARNP precepting a Gonzaga NP student in Washington appears to qualify, given Gonzaga's in-state status; whether Gonzaga submits the program-side verification form is not stated on its public pages. Gonzaga, for its part, recognizes preceptors with a chance to join its adjunct faculty, a signed record of precepting hours, DynaMed Plus access and awards such as Preceptor of the Year.

Questions Gonzaga students ask
I live in Vancouver. Can my Gonzaga practicum be in Portland?
Gonzaga places NP practicums at approved sites in the state where you are licensed to practice. Oregon never adopted the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate Washington license gives no privilege there, and whether Oregon expects its own RN license of an out-of-state NP student is not settled on its board's pages. Raise any site across the river with the Clinical Placement Team before approaching it.
Do I have to live near Spokane to study in Gonzaga's online MSN?
No. Coursework is online and asynchronous, and your practicum happens in your own part of Washington, with faculty visiting you there. Spokane comes into the picture for immersions, six on the FNP track and five on the PMHNP track, usually beginning about halfway through the program at one or two a semester. The travel is yours to budget.
Can I do Gonzaga clinical hours at the Washington hospital where I work?
With faculty approval, yes, inside firm limits. Gonzaga's FAQ sets three conditions: someone other than your direct supervisor precepts you, practicum time stays separate from paid shifts, and the placement sits on a different unit from yours. PMHNP students may not use their own RN practice setting, although the wider organization remains open to them.
Can I log Washington clinical hours over the winter break?
No. Gonzaga counts no hours before a semester starts, during university breaks or between terms. The 2026-27 online graduate calendar closes fall on December 18 and opens spring on January 12, so that gap stays off limits even if your preceptor has open clinic days. Plan your heaviest weeks inside the term.
When should I start looking for a Washington preceptor?
Sooner than feels necessary. Gonzaga publishes no placement-request deadline, since the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook holds that timing, but Washington systems set lead times of their own: Providence in Spokane wants onboarding papers at least four weeks before a start, and Kaiser Permanente Washington takes requests on an annual cycle. Add faculty review and CPNW clearance, and a full term ahead is a sensible floor.
