Gonzaga's nurse practitioner programs for nurses living in Idaho

Idaho's board, the compact and student practice

The Idaho Board of Nursing sits inside the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). Idaho has been a compact state since January 19, 2018, and AANP lists it among the full practice states, which makes clinics owned and led by nurse practitioners a real option for FNP students who need at least half their hours with an NP. The FNP nurse practitioner hours rule covers that planning.

Two Idaho provisions speak to students. Under IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a, a matriculated APRN student who is licensed in Idaho, or works there on a compact privilege, may perform APRN functions that form an integral part of an accredited curriculum. Idaho Code 54-1412 separately exempts students in approved programs performing functions incident to formal instruction, and under the Board's 2024 education policy, a preceptor must be licensed at or above the level the student is working toward.

Nothing in Idaho's rules speaks directly to clinicals run by nursing programs based in other states. The Board's page routes questions about schools outside Idaho to its licensing inbox; that is a program-level question, best left to Gonzaga's Clinical Placement Team. Boise and southern Idaho

The Boise City metro, home to about 864,000 people, holds most of southern Idaho's specialty care. St. Luke's Health System works with about 175 school partners on roughly 3,000 rotations a year, and only affiliated schools may ask for one, through myClinicalExchange. Advanced practice students, NPs among them, face an added step: St. Luke's requires an application and asks that its student services team be contacted before any rotation request, and placement depends on preceptor availability.

Saint Alphonsus Health System is another of Idaho's largest systems. Farther east, the Idaho Falls and Twin Falls metros each count well over 100,000 residents, and Idaho's health department puts the state's critical access hospitals at about 26 to 27. Their rural clinics suit FNP students, who must see patients in every age group, and each small hospital handles its own agreements. All are examples of possible settings, not Gonzaga sites.

Shortage figures and preceptor support in Idaho

HRSA's summary for June 30, 2026 lists 114 primary care shortage areas in Idaho, with about 44% of need met and 104 more practitioners needed. Mental health is tighter: 65 designated areas, roughly 30% of need met and 48 practitioners short. PMHNP students should look beyond hospital units to community mental health programs and outpatient psychiatric practices.

Official sources show no Idaho incentive aimed at NP preceptors. A 2026 bill, H.B. 655, offers physicians who precept at least 360 unpaid hours a year, mostly in rural shortage areas, an exemption from Medicaid prior authorization, but it counts only DO and PA students at Idaho institutions, so Gonzaga students and NP preceptors fall outside it.
