Gonzaga's NP tracks and clinicals for Oregon nurses
Oregon residents can enter Gonzaga's FNP and PMHNP tracks, complete their practicums at approved Oregon sites and host Gonzaga's clinical faculty there in person. Oregon's board requires nothing up front from NP programs based in other states, but the state has kept out of the Nurse Licensure Compact, which shapes any plan that crosses a border.

Your options as an Oregon resident
Gonzaga admits Oregon residents to all three of its admitting graduate programs. What differs is the kind of clinical work and where it can take place.

Where the compact stops
The Nurse Licensure Compact ends at the Columbia River. Oregon never joined, and the compact's own map lists no bill to join, so an Oregon RN license is good in Oregon alone and a multistate license issued by Washington or Idaho carries no privilege here.
For Oregon residents that simply means building around Oregon sites. Harder cases run the other way: a Washington nurse eyeing a Portland clinic, or anyone moving south mid-program, needs to know whether OSBN wants an NP student from a non-Oregon program to carry an Oregon RN license, and that point was not confirmed on a board page. AANP lists Oregon among the full practice states, so nurse practitioners can lead their own primary care and psychiatric practices, a useful fact given Gonzaga's rule that half or more of FNP hours be spent with a nurse practitioner.
What OSBN asks of out-of-state NP programs
Less than you might expect. OSBN's APRN FAQ says plainly that an out-of-state APRN program does not need Board approval before placing students in Oregon. The yearly notice OSBN does collect, due before learning activities begin, comes from practical and registered nursing programs in other states that prepare students for first licensure; advanced practice programs are exempt. An older rule that made NP students of non-Oregon programs seek prior Board authorization came off the books on July 1, 2021.
Two OSBN notes still touch Gonzaga. Anyone teaching in Oregon as faculty needs an active Oregon nursing license, which bears on the in-person site visit, and a school enrolling Oregon students must first be authorized, either by the state's Higher Education Coordinating Commission or through NC-SARA. Gonzaga participates in NC-SARA, marks Oregon as meeting licensure requirements on its disclosures page, and its compliance rules for clinical faculty call for licenses in every state they visit. Portland-area systems and how they admit NP students
The Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro counts about 2.54 million people, nearly 2 million of them on the Oregon side, and four large systems anchor it. Each wants a school agreement in place before a student arrives; they differ in who files and how early.

Salem, Eugene, Bend and the rest of the state
Beyond Portland, Salem's metro has roughly 446,000 residents, Eugene-Springfield's roughly 382,000 and Bend's roughly 266,000. Samaritan Health Services is among the state's larger systems, and PeaceHealth's Center for Medical Education and Research coordinates rotations across its Oregon network with accredited academic partners, though its online pages describe no NP intake.
HRSA's summary for June 30, 2026 shows why community clinics deserve a close look. Oregon has 178 primary care shortage areas with about 44% of need met and 310 practitioners missing, and 135 mental health shortage areas with only about 25% of need met, 90 practitioners short. PMHNP students should weigh community mental health programs and NP-led psychiatric practices as seriously as the big systems; PMHNP preceptors in the West covers who qualifies.
No Oregon incentive for preceptors appeared in official sources. Gonzaga's thanks travel with you: preceptors can become Gonzaga adjunct faculty, receive a certificate verifying their precepting hours, use the university's DynaMed Plus account and be considered for Preceptor of the Month.
Faculty on site, immersions in Spokane
Oregon counts as one of Gonzaga's four site-visit states: a clinical faculty member travels to your Oregon clinic during each practicum course, with no added campus day. FNP visits are in person, graded against the OSCE rubric while you care for three or four patients; PMHNP students may be observed through a telehealth visit.
Immersions are the trips to plan for. The FNP track has six in Spokane and the PMHNP track five; they begin near the middle of the program, come at a pace of one or two per semester and last two or three days each. Travel costs are yours, so set clinic days with your preceptor around those dates early. Faculty site visits walks through hosting one.

Questions Gonzaga students ask
I live in Portland. Can I precept across the river in Vancouver?
Only with care. Your practicum belongs in a state where your license lets you practice, and an Oregon RN license carries no compact privilege into Washington. A Vancouver site would mean holding a Washington license too, then clearing CPNW and faculty approval like any Washington placement. Talk it through with the Clinical Placement Team before you contact a Washington clinic.
How far ahead should I plan an Oregon placement?
Work back from the system's own clock. Providence Oregon asks for the rotation request and HR documents a minimum of four weeks ahead, and a new agreement there can add several more weeks. Gonzaga publishes no request deadline of its own, since that sits in the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook, so a full term of lead time is the safer habit.
Is Gonzaga's DNP an option for a master's-prepared Oregon nurse?
Gonzaga's Post-Master's DNP lists no residency restriction. Its practicum hours are indirect, earned on a DNP project at an Oregon organization you propose alongside an agency liaison, and its immersions happen online rather than on campus. Confirm eligibility with Gonzaga before applying.
Can my Gonzaga site visit in Oregon be virtual?
It depends on your track. Gonzaga's FNP Clinical Faculty Packet requires faculty to make the FNP visit face to face, so FNP students host them at the clinic. The PMHNP packet allows either an in-person visit or a virtual one that observes you with patients over telehealth, so PMHNP students should confirm the format with course faculty.
Does Oregon staying out of the compact affect my admission?
No. Gonzaga admits Oregon residents who hold an active, unrestricted RN license, and Gonzaga's disclosures page gives Oregon a "Meets" for its nurse practitioner MSN. The compact only comes into play when you consider a site in another state or move during the program, and both call for a talk with Gonzaga first.
