Why a Gonzaga preceptor search stalls

Most dead ends trace back to a handful of causes. They rarely mean the effort was wrong; they mean the search needs a different target or a different order.

The provider type misses the course. FNP practicums run in primary care with a nurse practitioner for at least half the hours, and PMHNP practicums need a qualified mental health professional.
The clinic belongs to a health system that deals with schools, not students. Large systems want a school-level affiliation agreement first, so a clinician's personal yes stalls at the front office.
The ask arrives late. Busy clinicians commit to students well before a semester, and many already teach students from other programs.
The schedule request is built around your job. Gonzaga expects you to complete hours when your preceptor is available, so flexible days open more doors than a fixed weekday.
The candidate is off-limits. Your direct supervisor cannot precept you, and PMHNP students cannot use their own RN practice setting.

Competition is real as well. In Washington alone, the WSU College of Nursing in Spokane, the University of Washington, Seattle University and Pacific Lutheran University all run NP programs that approach the same clinicians Gonzaga students call.

What Gonzaga expects you to do first

Gonzaga describes placement as shared work among staff, program directors, faculty, clinical agencies and you. Its graduate FAQ gives the student the opening step: contacting local providers who might precept. The Clinical Placement Team then helps secure the site and preceptor and processes the contract and legal paperwork that clears you to start.

In practice, Gonzaga is waiting for names from you. The more complete each name is (license, board certification, site contact, a schedule that suits the course), the faster faculty can review it. If you have tried and come up empty, tell the team early. The Department of Nursing holds affiliation agreements with facilities and providers across the western U.S. Students report that Gonzaga has shared lists of past sites and preceptors, which can seed your own calls.

Widen the search without breaking a rule

Your practicum has to take place in the state where you are licensed, and for MSN NP students that is one of the ten western states Gonzaga admits from. Inside that state, distance is the main lever. A rural clinic two hours out may have more room for a student than a crowded practice across town.

Where you live also shapes the site visit. Students in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana get a clinical faculty visit at their site, and students in the other six states add an on-campus day in Spokane next to an immersion, so a distant site still satisfies the visit. If the term arrives without a preceptor

Tell your course faculty and the Clinical Placement Team before the semester opens, not after. No hour counts before the first day of the semester, and a late start squeezes every week that follows. Share every partial lead as well, even a clinic that said maybe, because a named site gives the team something concrete to work on.

A clinician's yes is not yet a placement: Gonzaga's faculty approval, an active affiliation agreement and CPNW compliance all come before your first countable hour.

Questions Gonzaga students ask

Will Gonzaga assign me a preceptor if I cannot find one?

Gonzaga describes placement as a shared process. You make the first contact with local providers, and the Clinical Placement Team works with you to secure and finalize the site and preceptor. Gonzaga's public pages make no promise to assign one, so raise a stalled search with the team early and keep your own outreach going alongside it.

Can a physician or physician assistant precept my FNP hours?

Yes, within limits. The catalog accepts a nurse practitioner, physician or physician assistant for the FNP practicums unless your state requires an MD or NP, and at least half of your FNP hours must be with a nurse practitioner. Can I do my practicum where I already work?

Often, with faculty approval. Your preceptor cannot be your direct supervisor, practicum hours must be kept separate from paid hours, and the practicum must run on a different unit from yours. PMHNP students cannot use their own RN practice setting, though another part of the same organization may work.

What if a preceptor says yes but the clinic says no?

That usually means the clinic's parent organization wants an affiliation agreement with Gonzaga, or runs its own student onboarding. Ask the clinician who handles student agreements, pass that contact to the Clinical Placement Team, and keep a second candidate warm while the paperwork moves.
