Gonzaga nursing from Montana: programs, licenses and practicum sites
Montana is the easternmost of Gonzaga's four site-visit states, where clinical faculty come to your own clinical site, and one of the ten states its nurse practitioner tracks admit from. The state board leaves graduate programs out of its approval process, so your planning centers on your license, the systems that anchor care across a very large state, and the drive or flight to Spokane.

A Montana address qualifies you for each Gonzaga graduate program now enrolling. The MSN tracks send your practicum to approved sites in Montana, where you hold your license; the DNP works differently.

Whatever the track, Gonzaga expects you to take the first step: its FAQ asks students to reach out to providers near them who might precept, and the Clinical Placement Team takes it from there to a finished placement.
How Montana's board treats graduate nursing students
Montana regulates out-of-state clinicals for pre-licensure students only. ARM 24.159.608 makes a program preparing students for first licensure get a green light from the Board, or from its executive director, ahead of any Montana placement, with proof of accreditation, a faculty supervision plan and assurance that no Montana student is displaced. The Montana Board of Nursing's FAQ puts graduate programs, like RN-to-BSN programs, outside that approval step.
The Board does attach one condition. Because students care for Montana patients, the program has to confirm that each student's license is active and good in Montana. As a compact member, Montana accepts multistate licenses: the board's RN page confirms that a nurse practicing on another member state's multistate license needs no second, Montana-issued one. The RN license guide sets Montana beside the other nine states.
AANP places Montana in its full practice group, so nurse practitioners can run clinics on their own, a real asset in rural counties for FNP students who owe at least half their hours to an NP preceptor.
A facility can ask for more: licensure in Missoula
Board rules are the floor, and a health system can set a higher bar. Community Medical Center in Missoula takes advanced practice rotations only from affiliated schools, scheduled through its Learning and Advancement Center, and its clinical rotations page states that Montana RN licensure is required for all RN to BSN and graduate level nursing students.
For most Montana residents that is simple, because a license issued by Montana satisfies it. It matters if your license came from another compact state, or if you plan a move. Check each site's license rule before a clinician commits.
Montana systems a practicum could draw on
Montana's care is concentrated in a handful of regional centers: the Billings metro has about 194,000 people, Bozeman and Missoula about 129,000 each, the Kalispell area about 115,000, Helena about 97,000 and Great Falls about 85,000. The systems below are examples of possible settings, described from their own public pages, and not sites with Gonzaga agreements.

Site visits across a big state, and the trips to Spokane
Because Montana sits inside Gonzaga's four-state region, clinical faculty travel to you: at least one visit at your Montana site in each practicum course, with no added campus day. FNP students are watched with three or four patients and graded on the OSCE rubric, in person; PMHNP students may have a telehealth visit instead. The immersions are the part that takes planning from Montana. FNP students attend six in Spokane and PMHNP students five, generally one or two a semester from around the program's midpoint. Missoula and Kalispell are closer to Spokane than Billings or Great Falls, but every trip costs clinic days, so map immersion dates onto your preceptor's calendar before the semester starts. Spokane immersions lists them by course.
Shortage figures and preceptor support
HRSA's summary for June 30, 2026 counts 147 primary care shortage areas in Montana, where only about 38% of need is met, lower than in Washington, Idaho, Oregon or Alaska, with 72 more practitioners needed. Mental health coverage is somewhat better at about 41% of need met across 112 designated areas, still 55 practitioners short.
Those gaps make rural clinics and critical access hospitals strong FNP settings, and PMHNP students may find community mental health centers and NP-led psychiatric practices more open than hospital units. Official sources show no Montana program that rewards preceptors. Does my Gonzaga clinical faculty need a Montana license to visit me?
The Montana Board's FAQ ties the need for a Montana license to hands-on patient care: an out-of-state instructor who only consults with you and your preceptor needs none. Gonzaga's own compliance list for clinical faculty adds a license in every state they visit, so the visitor's licensing is Gonzaga's to arrange.
Can I find my own preceptor at Billings Clinic?
The system's student page describes one portal, My Clinical Exchange, for NP students who have already secured a placement and for those still looking, which suggests both routes exist. Gonzaga still requires faculty approval and an active affiliation agreement before any hours, so bring any Billings Clinic contact to the Clinical Placement Team early.
Is the Gonzaga DNP a fit for a Montana nurse?
It can be. The Post-Master's DNP takes nurses holding a nursing master's who work in advanced practice or leadership, lists no residency restriction, holds its immersions online and builds its practicum from project hours guided by an agency liaison at an organization you choose, which suits rural Montana. How many times will I travel to Spokane?
For the MSN, once per immersion: six trips on the FNP track and five on the PMHNP track, with the two early immersions tied to the health assessment course and the rest to the specialty courses. Montana students need no extra campus day for site visits, since faculty come to the clinic. DNP students attend virtual immersions instead.
Does Gonzaga's MSN meet Montana's licensure requirements?
Gonzaga's licensure disclosures mark Montana as meeting requirements for the MSN nurse practitioner tracks, and Gonzaga takes part in NC-SARA. National certification and APRN licensure after graduation are separate steps, the second handled by the Montana Board of Nursing, so check the Board's current requirements as you near the end of the program.
