Practicum hours at your own workplace: Gonzaga's four conditions
Gonzaga lets graduate nursing students earn practicum hours where they are employed, provided faculty approve it and three safeguards hold: the preceptor is not your direct supervisor, practicum time is kept off your paid shifts, and the practicum happens on a unit other than yours. PMHNP students also stay out of their own RN practice setting, and DNP students stay out of their own area of the organization.

Gonzaga's rule, word for word
The MSN and Second MSN FAQs answer the workplace question directly: "With faculty approval, you can complete practicum hours at your place of employment. However, a preceptor may not be your direct supervisor, practicum hours must be separate from worked hours and practicum experiences must be performed on units other than where you work."
Read it as one permission with four conditions attached. Faculty approval comes first, then the three safeguards. Missing any one of them turns a convenient placement into a request faculty can decline, so treat each condition as a line to fill in on your Practicum Site Placement Request rather than a detail to sort out after you start.
Gonzaga also encourages students to look beyond their own facilities, so a workplace practicum is one option among several rather than the expected route. It suits students whose employer runs services well outside their own unit and has providers they have never reported to.
The four conditions in practice
| Condition | What it rules out | What to show faculty |
|---|---|---|
| Faculty approval | Starting hours on the strength of a manager's yes | The site, unit and preceptor on the site request, approved before day one |
| No direct supervisor as preceptor | Your nurse manager, clinical supervisor or anyone you report to | A preceptor outside your reporting line |
| Hours separate from worked hours | Counting a paid shift, or part of one, as practicum time | Practicum dates and times that do not overlap your work schedule |
| A different unit | Your home unit or department | A unit, clinic or service line where you are not staffed |
A useful test: if a coworker could reasonably hand you a task from your job during a practicum hour, the separation is not clean enough. Choose a setting where your role that day is plainly student, not employee, and where the people around you know it.
Watch for drift over the semester, too. A preceptor who is promoted into your chain of command, or a practicum clinic that starts borrowing you for coverage, changes the picture. Tell course faculty if either happens, rather than waiting for the evaluation.
The PMHNP version: outside your RN practice setting
Psychiatric-mental health students have a narrower line. The PMHNP Preceptor Packet says: "Students may not complete PMHNP practicum hours in their own specific RN practice setting; they may complete hours within the greater organization." The test is your RN role, not only the name on your unit's door.
Consider an RN on an inpatient psychiatric unit. Under this rule, that nurse could look elsewhere in the same health system, such as an outpatient psychiatry clinic, a consult service or an affiliated behavioral health center, provided faculty approve it. The preceptor still has to be a qualified mental health professional Gonzaga accepts, and the other safeguards still apply: no direct supervisor and no paid time.
For a PMHNP student who already works in behavioral health, the employer can be the most natural site, and the organization-wide permission keeps it usable outside the exact setting where they practice as a nurse. The guide to the PMHNP practicum courses shows which populations each course needs, which helps you choose the right corner of the organization.
The DNP version: indirect hours and an agency liaison
The Post-Master's DNP FAQ allows workplace practicums on parallel terms: "You may complete practicum hours at your current workplace. However, you cannot complete practicum hours in the area of the organization where you are employed or during time on the job when being paid. Additionally, your liaison preceptor cannot be a direct supervisor."
DNP practice hours are indirect project hours rather than patient care, which can make an employer a practical home for a DNP project: you already know its data, its gaps and its people. The same separation holds. The project work sits outside your own area, the hours sit outside paid time, and the agency liaison comes from outside your reporting line. Gonzaga's DNP Agency Liaison Checklist has the liaison confirm they are neither a relative nor a friend and have no direct reporting relationship with you.
The DNP agency liaison guide covers the liaison's checklist, contacts and evaluation in full.
Why the supervisor bar exists
Gonzaga is a Washington program, so WAC 246-840-533, the state's education rule for nursing programs, governs who may precept its students. It rules out immediate family, and it rules out anyone whose financial, business or professional ties to you would get in the way of a fair evaluation. A manager who writes your performance review and also grades your clinical judgment has exactly that kind of conflict.
The evaluation carries weight. Gonzaga's FNP guide describes the preceptor's end-of-semester evaluation as the record of your presence in the clinical setting, and it goes into your permanent file. Faculty rely on it to judge your progress, so an evaluator who is also your boss weakens a document everyone depends on.
The same Washington rule limits a preceptor to two students at any one time. At a large employer where several colleagues are enrolled in NP programs at once, that cap can close off a preceptor you hoped to use, so ask early.
Making a workplace practicum work
- Map your organizationList the units, clinics and service lines outside your own, and note who practices there as an ARNP, physician or PA, or, for PMHNP, a qualified mental health professional.
- Check the reporting lineConfirm the preceptor has no supervisory role over you now, and none planned during the semester.
- Ask about the agreementFind out through the Clinical Placement Team whether Gonzaga already holds an affiliation agreement with your employer; no hour counts without an active one.
- Separate the calendarsBuild the practicum schedule around the preceptor's clinic days and away from your shifts. Gonzaga's faculty recommend capping paid work at 20 hours a week once clinicals begin.
- Submit and wait for approvalPut the unit, preceptor and schedule on the site request, and start hours only after faculty approve it and the semester has begun.
Why Gonzaga students choose us when the workplace falls short
A workplace practicum works well when your employer has the right service outside your unit and a preceptor outside your reporting line. When it lacks one of those, or a manager declines, we locate a qualified preceptor elsewhere in your state with no employment tie to you, so the four conditions are settled from the first conversation.
We check every candidate against the workplace conditions and Gonzaga's preceptor requirements, then prepare what the site request asks for: the preceptor's license and national certification, their time in practice, the site contact and a schedule built around your job. Faculty at Gonzaga decide; we see to it that the file in front of them is complete and meets every workplace condition before it goes in. Send your track, state and course through the form below.
Questions Gonzaga students ask
Can a coworker be my Gonzaga preceptor?
A colleague can precept you if they are not your direct supervisor, the practicum happens on a unit other than yours, they meet Gonzaga's preceptor requirements, and faculty approve the placement. Washington's rule also bars relationships that would compromise an impartial evaluation, so a close friend at work is a poor choice even when the reporting line is clean. Describe the relationship plainly on your request.
Can I count hours during a paid shift if my manager agrees?
No. Gonzaga's workplace rule requires practicum hours to be separate from worked hours, and the DNP FAQ says the same about time on the job when being paid. A manager's permission does not change that. Schedule practicum time on days or hours you are off the clock, and keep your log matched to the approved schedule. Our guide to when clinical hours count covers the risk to hours logged outside Gonzaga's conditions.
Does a different floor in the same hospital count as a different unit?
Gonzaga's MSN rule asks for a unit other than where you work, so a separate floor or department generally meets the wording, but faculty decide each request. PMHNP students face a stricter test: not their own RN practice setting. If your job floats you across several units, say so on the request and ask faculty which settings count as yours.
Do I still need an affiliation agreement if I already work at the site?
Yes. Employment does not replace the agreement between Gonzaga and the organization. Gonzaga's hour rules make a confirmed, active agreement with the practicum organization a condition of the first countable hour, whether or not you are on its payroll. The Clinical Placement Team can tell you whether one is already in place with your employer.
Can a DNP student run the project at their own employer?
Yes, with limits. Gonzaga's DNP FAQ permits a workplace practicum, provided the project sits outside your own area of the organization, none of the hours overlap paid time, and your liaison is someone you do not report to. Because DNP hours are indirect project hours, an employer can be a practical home for the project when those three limits hold.
