Rhode Island and Gonzaga: the MSN note, the DNP route and state rules

Rhode Island on Gonzaga's disclosure table
Rhode Island belongs to a short group on Gonzaga's table, with Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi and South Carolina, where the NP master's shows "Meets" beside Gonzaga's statement that it cannot presently take MSN students from those places. That note stacks on top of the residency rule, which already limits the FNP and PMHNP tracks to ten western states. The state authorization page walks through the whole table.

The DNP question for Rhode Island nurses
Gonzaga's note names MSN students, and the DNP pages set no residency limit, so the Post-Master's DNP is the fair question to put to Gonzaga. It runs online for master's-prepared nurses in advanced practice or leadership, and its hours are indirect: effort on a DNP project instead of patient visits. Gonzaga tallies your MSN hours into the 1,000 it requires.
Early on, NURS 700 asks you to settle on a practice problem and the organization that will host your work, and the agency liaison there stays with you through the practicum courses. That liaison signs Gonzaga's online checklist, is reached by the program at least three times per semester and evaluates you when each course ends.
Rhode Island's board and its return to the compact
Rhode Island's nursing board carries the long name Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education, and licensing runs through the state Department of Health. Rhode Island rejoined the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 1, 2024, so a qualified resident licensed since January 1 of that year holds a multistate license. There is no APRN Compact in Rhode Island yet, and AANP rates the state full practice for NPs.
Rhode Island's education rule for nursing programs, 216-RICR-40-05-3, targets schools located in Rhode Island, and no provision in it was found asking programs from elsewhere for board approval before placing students. Providence-area settings for a project
The Providence-Warwick metro holds about 1.1 million people on the Rhode Island side, most of the state. South County Health, CharterCARE, Care New England and Brown University Health are among the larger organizations, and the Rhode Island Department of Health works on statewide questions. Any of them may agree or decline to host a DNP student, and Gonzaga reviews your proposal.
Moving west first
For NP study, the path runs through a move. Once a state among Gonzaga's ten is home, the FNP or PMHNP application opens to you there, with in-person practicums under that state's license and six Spokane immersions for FNP students or five for PMHNP. Enrolled students should check with their program before relocating. The ten-state rule covers the list.

Why is Gonzaga unable to accept Rhode Island MSN students if the state shows "Meets"?
Gonzaga's disclosure page gives the two facts side by side without a reason. "Meets" is a licensure determination, while the unable-to-accept note is an admission position. Either way, the NP tracks also require residence in one of ten western states. Contact Gonzaga's graduate admissions for anything beyond what the page states.
Can I do Gonzaga's Post-Master's DNP from Providence?
The DNP pages list no residency limit, and the Rhode Island note on Gonzaga's table names MSN students. The doctorate is therefore worth raising, but only Gonzaga can confirm eligibility for a Rhode Island address. Ask before you apply, and before you approach a host organization.
Can my DNP liaison be my manager?
No. Your direct supervisor is ineligible, and the liaison must also attest to being neither a relative nor a friend. Your own employer can still host the project, provided the hours happen away from your usual work area and not during paid time.
Would a Gonzaga project have to use Rhode Island's placement registry?
The registry rule sits in regulations for Rhode Island's board-approved schools, whose clinical agency agreements have to prove they take part in the state's central placement registry. Nothing in the rule says whether a school based elsewhere is bound by it, so ask Gonzaga how a Rhode Island project site would be handled.
