Studying with Gonzaga from California: licenses, health systems and lead times
California residents can enroll in Gonzaga's online FNP and PMHNP tracks, and the state's nursing board already counts Gonzaga among the outside NP programs cleared for California clinicals. The harder work is inside the health systems, where most practicums need a school-to-system agreement, a request filed by the school's coordinator and weeks or months of notice.

Which Gonzaga programs fit a California resident
California is the most populous of the ten states Gonzaga's MSN nurse practitioner tracks draw from, and a Californian's practicums stay in California because Gonzaga ties each one to the state where the student holds a license. The table shows each program from a California address.

What California asks of you and your preceptor
The Board of Registered Nursing requires prior approval for any NP program from outside California that places students in the state, and its published list names Gonzaga for the Family and Psych/Mental Health tracks. The California BRN guide covers that listing in depth.
Your own license is the piece you control. California never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, and 16 CCR 1486(d) has a student of an outside NP program hold an active, valid California RN license before taking part in clinicals there, so a multistate license from Arizona or Utah does not stretch across the border. A California RN license is also the first requirement for California NP certification after you graduate.
Preceptors in California hold a current license in their own profession and are qualified for the NP category you are training in. The regulation also calls for a written agreement signed by the agency, the preceptor and the program that defines the preceptor's role. AANP rates California a restricted practice state: in some settings and procedures an NP works under a standardized protocol agreement, with exemptions that the BRN explains.
Southern California: Kaiser, UCLA, Scripps and Sharp
The Los Angeles metro held 12,844,441 people in 2025, the Inland Empire 4,769,007 and San Diego 3,282,248. Los Angeles County alone has 99 primary care and 86 mental health shortage designations. The systems below are examples of Southern California settings, each with its own intake rules.
- Kaiser Permanente Southern California: every request type needs a current affiliation agreement with the school and program. The school's clinical coordinator applies through Nursing Pathways, a medical center academic liaison weighs capacity, and online students go the same way. Kaiser's 2022 FAQ asks for the request three months out.
- UCLA Health: its preceptorship pathway covers MSN nurse practitioner students, FNP and PMHNP included, in quarterly windows. The Winter 2027 window runs October 5 to 16, 2026, and Spring 2027 runs January 4 to 15. Students may not ask UCLA staff to precept them; a coordinator can name a preferred preceptor on the form, though UCLA does not promise the pairing.
- Scripps Health: most graduate students must identify their own preceptor before the school files a formal request in Complio. A new affiliation agreement takes six to eight weeks, and clearance closes three weeks before the start. Gonzaga did not appear on Scripps's undated affiliation list when it was checked in September 2026.
- Sharp HealthCare: nursing students complete requirements in Complio. Cedars-Sinai publishes no NP student process.
Bay Area and Sacramento: Sutter, Kaiser, UCSF and UC Davis
The San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro counted 4,630,041 residents in 2025, San Jose 1,984,473 and Sacramento 2,477,274. Northern California systems publish some of the most detailed student rules in the West.
- Sutter Health: one Advanced Practice placement form lists FNP and PMHNP tracks, and only the school coordinator submits it, no earlier than three months before the start. A decision follows in about 60 days once the contract is verified; Sutter's own team then spends up to 90 days on internal preceptor outreach and encourages students to keep looking outside Sutter meanwhile. Onboarding in myClinicalExchange wraps up two weeks before day one.
- Kaiser Permanente Northern California: the school must have a signed contract on file with the regional office, give six to eight weeks' notice and submit through its program coordinator. Kaiser's Fremont page bars students and employees from contacting departments to secure a preceptorship.
- UCSF Health: its student placement page, as indexed, describes outside APP students arranging a preceptor themselves, since UCSF keeps no central preceptor database and does not assign APP preceptors; an intake form then checks the agreement.
- UC Davis Health: preceptorships go to its regional nursing schools and its own employees, with other graduate students weighed case by case; clearance can take two months. Stanford Health Care describes partnerships with more than 12 APP programs.
Timing a California practicum around Spokane
Gonzaga's faculty visit clinical sites in person only in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana. A California FNP student adds an on-campus day in Spokane next to one immersion in each practicum course, and the faculty site visit happens there; PMHNP students should ask whether their visit is in person or by telehealth, which the PMHNP packet permits. FNP students attend six immersions and PMHNP students five.
Stack those trips on top of the system calendars. A Sutter request goes in no sooner than three months ahead, waits about 60 days for a decision and can then take up to 90 more for preceptor outreach; UCLA's window shuts weeks before its quarter; and Gonzaga counts no hours before its semester opens. Questions Gonzaga students ask
I hold a multistate RN license from another state. Can I do Gonzaga clinicals in California with it?
No. California is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, and its NP program regulation requires students of outside programs to hold an active California RN license for clinicals in the state. If you are moving to California or live there on another state's license, apply to the California BRN early, since the practicum cannot start without it.
Can I ask a Kaiser nurse practitioner I know to precept me?
Kaiser's Northern California pages tell students and employees not to contact departments directly to arrange a preceptorship, and Southern California requests start with the school's coordinator in Nursing Pathways. Share the name with Gonzaga's Clinical Placement Team instead and let the request move through the school, with an affiliation agreement in place.
Which California systems expect students to bring their own preceptor?
Scripps says most graduate students must identify a preceptor before the school files a request, and UCSF's indexed page describes outside APP students arranging their own. Sutter searches internally for up to 90 days after approving a request, and UCLA pairs students itself while accepting a named preference. Kaiser's pages do not say.
Do California students have to travel to Spokane for site visits?
Yes, for FNP students. Anyone living outside Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana arranges an extra on-campus day beside an immersion in each practicum course, and the faculty visit takes place in Spokane. PMHNP students should confirm with course faculty, because the PMHNP packet also allows a telehealth visit.
