New York nurses and Gonzaga: registration rules, the DNP and the NP question
Two facts shape the answer for New York. Gonzaga's FNP and PMHNP master's tracks are limited to people living in ten western states, and Gonzaga's own disclosure table marks New York "Does not meet" for that program. That leaves the online Post-Master's DNP to discuss with Gonzaga, including whether a New York address qualifies, before you apply.

The "Does not meet" mark belongs to the MSN nurse practitioner program. The only DNP-specific notes on that table sit beside Kansas and Tennessee, so put the New York question to the program directly. The state authorization page explains how Gonzaga's table reads.
Registration comes first in New York
New York puts the program's standing ahead of everything else. NYSED's Office of the Professions says any nursing school based elsewhere or taught online must hold NYSED registration or approval before its students rotate clinically in New York; federal VA and armed forces facilities are the exception. NP students face a sharper version, since the NP program itself has to be registered, and NYSED warns that NP rotations taken without it may even be unlawful.
The department's higher-education evaluators add a second layer. Placing a student clinically in any licensed profession creates what they call physical presence, which the Office of the Professions must approve ahead of time or exempt, and SARA membership does not replace that step. Gonzaga participates in NC-SARA, yet that alone leaves a New York placement unsettled. Whether indirect DNP project hours count as a placement is a question for Gonzaga before you pick a New York organization.
What the Post-Master's DNP asks of you
Gonzaga's online doctorate takes nurses with a nursing master's and an RN license, plus an APRN license and certification where their role calls for one. It looks for a master's GPA of 3.3, an evidence-based practice course and graduate statistics taken within five years. Credits and start terms are on the Post-Master's DNP page.
Practice hours here are indirect and belong to your DNP project. Gonzaga counts MSN hours toward a 1,000-hour total, and in your first semester NURS 700 has you pinpoint a practice problem and secure a host organization. An agency liaison there supports the practicum courses that follow.
No compact, and a 3,600-hour threshold for NPs
New York has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact and has no pending legislation to do so. A multistate license earned in another state therefore stops at the New York line. The APRN Compact has not passed in Albany either.
AANP's map puts New York in the full practice column, with a condition for newer NPs. Anyone under 3,600 practice hours needs a physician to collaborate under a signed agreement and set protocols.
Where a New York project might take shape
Downstate, the biggest names include NewYork-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, Northwell Health and NYC Health + Hospitals; upstate, the University of Rochester Medical Center runs UR Medicine. The New York State Department of Health handles statewide population questions. Beyond the New York City metro, home to about 13 million people on the New York side, the Buffalo, Rochester and Albany areas hold roughly a million each. Each chooses its own students.
Relocating west before an NP application
Moving is what reopens NP study. Settle in one of Gonzaga's ten states and an FNP or PMHNP application can go in from your new address, with in-person practicums under that state's license. Speak with your program before relocating, since Gonzaga warns that a mid-program move can affect licensure eligibility.

Questions Gonzaga students ask
Can I study in Gonzaga's online FNP program from New York?
Not from a New York address. Both NP tracks, like the Second MSN, take only residents of ten western states stretching from Alaska to Arizona. Gonzaga's licensure determination for New York also reads "Does not meet" for the NP master's, which matters if you planned to train elsewhere and return to practice here.
Could a Gonzaga DNP project happen at a New York hospital?
Possibly, but check first. NYSED wants schools from outside New York registered or approved before their students rotate clinically in the state, and it views a clinical placement as physical presence requiring approval or an exemption. Ask Gonzaga how it classifies indirect project hours in New York before you approach any organization there.
Is a multistate compact license valid for work in New York?
No. New York sits outside the compact, and NYSED says a multistate license issued elsewhere does not authorize practice there. Nurses coming into New York follow NYSED's checklist for a New York license.
Who can serve as my DNP agency liaison?
Someone at the host organization with no family, friendship or reporting link to you. On Gonzaga's checklist the liaison attests to that, agrees to receive orientation material and course objectives by email, accepts a minimum of three contacts during each semester and commits to an end-of-course evaluation. Your own supervisor is excluded.
