The doctorate takes about two years on Gonzaga's course page, and the overview describes seven to eight semesters. Projects end in a defense held in person or by video, so a New Jersey student can present without a trip. The Post-Master's DNP page has credits and hours.
Joint protocols and a compact license
AANP rates New Jersey reduced practice: an NP needs joint protocols, agreed with a collaborating physician, before ordering medications or devices. Nurse licensing belongs to the New Jersey Board of Nursing, part of the state's Division of Consumer Affairs. Compact membership took effect on November 15, 2021, so a multistate license issued in New Jersey covers the other compact states for as long as New Jersey is your primary residence.
What N.J.A.C. 13:37 covers
The first subchapter of New Jersey's nursing rules at N.J.A.C. 13:37 concerns Board accreditation of schools run by institutions holding a license from the state's Commission on Higher Education. One provision, 13:37-1.10(c), handles the opposite of a Gonzaga student's case, a New Jersey school using clinical agencies across state lines, and nothing in the subchapter creates a step for an outside school placing students in New Jersey.
Board guidance can sit outside the regulations, so ask Gonzaga to confirm there is nothing to file before your project starts in a New Jersey organization. The agency liaison page covers who can guide the work once the setting is chosen.
Newark to Camden: large systems and dense metros
The state's largest systems include RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health, as well as Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and Camden's Cooper University Health Care, and the New Jersey Department of Health covers public health. The New York metro's New Jersey side holds about 7.1 million people and the state's share of the Philadelphia metro about 1.4 million, with Trenton-Princeton near 399,000 and Atlantic City-Hammonton near 372,000. Treat these as possible settings; Gonzaga's faculty approve what you propose.
The road west to an NP track
Anyone aiming for an FNP or PMHNP credential has to relocate first and apply second. After the move you license through your new state, and Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and Arizona belong to the compact. Expect six Spokane immersions on the FNP track and five on the PMHNP track, as the ten-state rule and Spokane immersions pages explain. Moving again mid-program could affect licensure eligibility, so talk to Gonzaga first.

Could I study Gonzaga's PMHNP online while living in New Jersey?
Not while you live in New Jersey. Only residents of Gonzaga's ten western admission states can enter the PMHNP or FNP track or the Second MSN, a region running from Washington and Oregon to Arizona and Alaska. New Jersey's "Meets" on the disclosure page describes licensure requirements, not admission. Relocating to one of the ten before applying is the path in.
Does New Jersey require out-of-state schools to register clinical placements?
The first subchapter of N.J.A.C. 13:37 speaks to programs under New Jersey-licensed institutions and to New Jersey programs placing students elsewhere; it sets no step for an outside school bringing students into New Jersey. Board guidance outside the regulations could still apply, so Gonzaga should confirm before your project begins.
When can I start Gonzaga's DNP?
Gonzaga's DNP page currently advertises a Summer 2027 intake, with applications due February 1, 2027. Earlier cycles listed fall and spring starts, so check Gonzaga's DNP admission page for the terms open when you apply, and confirm eligibility for a New Jersey address at the same time.
Do DNP practicum hours in New Jersey involve patient care?
No. Gonzaga's DNP FAQ classes these hours as indirect care, earned through work on your DNP project rather than direct patient care. You work with an agency liaison inside the organization, who receives Gonzaga's orientation material and course objectives, hears from Gonzaga at least three times each semester and evaluates you at the end of the course.
