Need a preceptor fast for your Gonzaga term
When the semester is weeks away, speed comes from choosing the right site and sending a complete request, not from cutting steps. Gonzaga counts no hour until faculty approve the preceptor, the affiliation agreement is active and you are clear in CPNW. We work all three fronts at once, so your first countable hour lands as early in the term as the rules allow.

The steps no rush can skip
A short runway changes the order you work in, not the steps themselves. Gonzaga's accrual rules set four conditions before any hour counts, and each one depends on someone else's calendar.
- Faculty approval of the preceptor and site, through your Practicum Site Placement Request.
- An active affiliation agreement between Gonzaga and the site, which the Clinical Placement Team processes.
- Compliance in every area CPNW requires, plus any onboarding the site runs on its own.
- The semester's start date. Hours logged before it, during a university break or between semesters do not count.
Because the agreement is often the slowest piece, a site that already holds one with Gonzaga can be worth more on a tight clock than a closer site that does not. The hour accrual rules page has Gonzaga's full wording.
Health system lead times to plan around
Large systems publish their own student timelines, and those run on top of Gonzaga's steps. A few examples, taken from each system's own student pages:

Independent practices and small clinics can often decide sooner, because the clinician and the person who signs agreements work in the same building. What to have ready this week
Everything on this list sits with you, and none of it needs a preceptor's name. Finishing it before a preceptor says yes takes days out of the approval chain.
- Your compliance record current: immunizations, TB screening, BLS, background check and drug screen, in CastleBranch or in CORE if your cohort has moved.
- A CV or resume and written learning goals for the semester, which Gonzaga asks you to give your preceptor before the first day.
- The practicum course objectives from Canvas, so a preceptor can see what the course expects.
- Honest availability, built around the preceptor's schedule rather than your own.
- Transportation settled, since Gonzaga expects students to get themselves to clinical sites.

How we work a short runway
A tight deadline is where a dedicated search earns its keep. Your placement advisor starts from your course, your licensed state and your travel radius, then works several candidates in parallel instead of waiting on one reply at a time.
We favor sites with a clear agreement path, confirm each preceptor's license, certification and experience before you hear the name, and hand you a request that faculty can review without back-and-forth. If a candidate wavers late, the next one is already in view.

If the first day of the term passes
A late start is not automatically a lost course. Practicum courses run the full semester, and hours follow your preceptor's availability, so a preceptor who begins in week four can still carry a course if the weekly pace works. Run the numbers with your course faculty early.
If the hours cannot fit, they may not run past the course end date unless course faculty approve an extension, and Gonzaga's practicum extension courses exist for finishing hours in a later term. Our page on falling behind on hours builds the catch-up plan.
An hour logged before approval, before the semester starts or with anyone other than your approved preceptor may not count, and Gonzaga warns that breaking these rules can put your place in the program at risk.
Questions Gonzaga students ask
Is there a deadline for Gonzaga's Practicum Site Placement Request?
Gonzaga publishes no request deadline on its public pages. That timing sits in the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook, which students receive but which is not posted publicly. Check the handbook, ask the Clinical Placement Team, and treat a health system's lead time, such as Providence's four-week packet, as an earlier deadline on top.
Can I start seeing patients while approval is pending?
Not for credit. Hours count only with an approved preceptor, at a site with an active affiliation agreement, once you are CPNW compliant and the semester has begun. Time spent before approval would not count toward the practicum, and Providence does not host job shadows in Spokane or Stevens counties at all.
Can two preceptors split a term to finish sooner?
Yes, within Gonzaga's limit of two approved preceptors per semester. Both need faculty approval before their hours count, and two part-time preceptors can carry a heavy course faster than one. Read about the two-preceptor limit before building a plan around it.
How fast can you find a preceptor?
It depends on your state, your course and how far you can travel. A primary care search near a city moves differently from a psychiatric search in a rural county. Your placement advisor tells you what the local picture looks like after the first round of outreach, and the search keeps moving until you have a fit.
Should I take any preceptor who says yes?
Only one who fits the course. An FNP pediatric practicum needs a preceptor who sees children, and at least half of FNP hours must be with a nurse practitioner. A quick yes from the wrong provider type costs more time than it saves once faculty review the request.
