Gonzaga for West Virginia nurses: the online doctorate, WVHEPC rules and the move west

Three Gonzaga programs, one realistic route
Only the doctorate is a live Gonzaga option from West Virginia today, and even that needs Gonzaga's confirmation. The disclosure table rates West Virginia "Meets" for the NP MSN, but that rating speaks to licensure fit; the residency rule decides who is admitted.

How the Post-Master's DNP runs at a distance
The coursework is online and the program sets no campus visit requirement. Gonzaga's pages differ on pace, giving an average of seven to eight semesters in one place and an average completion time of two years in another, so ask about your own plan of study.
Each practicum course begins with an individualized proposal and objectives, and the hours count as indirect care toward your project. Your agency liaison fills out Gonzaga's online checklist, stays reachable for Gonzaga's contacts, three or more a term, and completes a course-end evaluation of your work. Which West Virginia body oversees graduate clinicals
West Virginia splits the job. Its RN board handles pre-licensure education alone, and a pre-licensure school from another state must win that board's approval before any rotation in a West Virginia facility. Graduate and advanced-degree programs are referred elsewhere: to their national accrediting body and to WVHEPC, the state's Higher Education Policy Commission. Practical nurses answer to a separate LPN board.
The state's nursing education office, part of WVHEPC, names two triggers for WVHEPC approval of a graduate or APRN program based outside the state: the institution does not belong to NC-SARA, or it sends a group of ten or more students to one clinical site. Gonzaga participates in NC-SARA. Graduate students in West Virginia clinicals also need the right license: a West Virginia RN license for residents of the state, a multistate one for everyone else.
Practice climate and project settings
AANP rates West Virginia reduced practice. A new NP's prescribing requires a physician collaborative agreement for the first three years, and a Schedule II narcotic can be prescribed for no more than three days at a time. West Virginia's compact membership dates to 2018, while the APRN Compact has not been enacted.
A project could be proposed to WVU Medicine, to Marshall Health Network, or to one of the Vandalia Health members, such as CAMC, Davis Health or Mon Health, as well as to the Bureau for Public Health. The main population centers are Charleston, Morgantown, Huntington and the Martinsburg area. Each organization sets its own terms, and Gonzaga reviews the proposal.
Planning a western move for an NP track
The NP tracks need a home address in one of the ten states. Idaho and Montana pair compact licensing with in-person faculty site visits at your clinical site, while Arizona, Utah and Wyoming are compact states where the visit happens instead during an added campus day in Spokane. Students already in the program should raise any planned move with Gonzaga, which cautions that relocating can change licensure eligibility. Is Gonzaga's online FNP open to West Virginia residents?
Not while you live in West Virginia. Both NP tracks take students solely from ten western states, as does the Second MSN. West Virginia shows "Meets" in Gonzaga's disclosures, but that rating covers licensure fit, not who is admitted. A new home address in one of those states is what opens an application.
Does WVHEPC need to approve Gonzaga before my DNP project?
West Virginia's nursing education office says WVHEPC approval comes into play for out-of-state graduate programs only if the school is outside NC-SARA or at least 10 of its students share one site. Gonzaga is an NC-SARA participant. Confirm with Gonzaga how it treats your particular setting.
What license do I need for DNP work in West Virginia?
The state's clinical rotation guide ties the license to where you live: a West Virginia RN license for graduate and APRN students who reside in West Virginia, or a multistate compact license for those based in another state. Gonzaga's DNP admission also asks for an APRN license and certification where they apply.
Could I base my DNP project at WVU Medicine?
You could propose it. A large academic system offers many practice gaps a DNP project might address, but WVU Medicine would decide on hosting, your liaison would need to satisfy the checklist, and Gonzaga would review the plan. Its mention here reflects size and reach, not any connection to Gonzaga.
