From Sioux Falls or Rapid City: what Gonzaga's nursing programs offer South Dakota nurses
South Dakota shares borders with Wyoming and Montana, two of Gonzaga's ten admission states, but it is not on the list itself, so the FNP and PMHNP tracks stay out of reach while you live here. The Gonzaga program that fits a South Dakota address is the online Post-Master's DNP, whose practicum runs as a project you design with a liaison at a host organization. On Gonzaga's licensure disclosures, South Dakota appears among the many states rated "Meets" for the NP master's. The rating concerns the curriculum. Enrollment in the NP tracks is still reserved for people living in the ten western states.

A project-based doctorate run from South Dakota
The Post-Master's DNP asks for 1,000 practicum hours overall, with your MSN hours credited toward it, and no fewer than 340 must come from the DNP itself. They are indirect care hours tied to your project rather than direct patient care. First-semester NURS 700 has you pinpoint a practice gap and establish a site, and NURS 704 adds practicum time later if you need it.
Your agency liaison signs Gonzaga's checklist to confirm the two of you are not related, not friends and not in a reporting line. How the South Dakota Board of Nursing treats outside programs
The South Dakota board leaves approval of programs headquartered elsewhere to their home states. Its note for such schools puts direct-care placement arrangements in the hands of the program and the host agency or preceptor, and it looks for one program faculty member licensed in South Dakota or practicing on a compact privilege, at the APRN level when APRN students are involved. DNP hours are indirect project work, so ask Gonzaga how it applies that guidance.
South Dakota's Nurse Licensure Compact membership took effect in January 2018. In February 2024 the state also signed the APRN Compact, joining a small group of adopters; that compact switches on only after a seventh state enacts it. AANP lists full practice here once an NP completes a 1,040-hour transition period in a collaborative arrangement, which may be with a physician, a certified NP or a certified nurse midwife.
Sanford, Avera and Monument Health as project ground
South Dakota's health systems include Avera Health, Monument Health and Sanford Health. Add the South Dakota Department of Health for population-level work. Sioux Falls and Rapid City are the two metro areas, and Aberdeen is the next hub in size.
Hosting remains each organization's own choice, and Gonzaga's review of the proposal comes before any hours count. Mentioning them here is about possibility, not an existing arrangement with Gonzaga.
Wyoming and Montana are next door
For an NP track, the shortest path from South Dakota crosses a state line. Residents of Wyoming or Montana can apply to Gonzaga's FNP and PMHNP tracks, and both states are compact members like South Dakota. The site-visit plan differs: Montana students have faculty visit their clinical site, while Wyoming students pair their faculty visit with an immersion trip to Spokane, one added campus day per practicum course. The Montana and Wyoming guides go further, and current students need to check with the program before relocating, because Gonzaga says a change of state may affect licensure eligibility.

Questions Gonzaga students ask
Can I take Gonzaga's PMHNP track while living in Sioux Falls?
Not while South Dakota is your home. The PMHNP and FNP tracks draw only from ten western states, two of which, Montana and Wyoming, border South Dakota. Practicums take place wherever you hold your license, so a nurse who moves across either border can apply as a resident there.
Would a Gonzaga NP MSN meet South Dakota's requirements if I come back later?
Gonzaga rates South Dakota "Meets" for its NP MSN. The South Dakota board's own bar for APRN licensure is a graduate program that includes 500 or more clinical hours in the chosen role and population, along with graduate pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and pharmacology courses. Confirm your own case with Gonzaga and the board.
Must the South Dakota board approve Gonzaga before my DNP project starts?
The board states that approving programs from other states is outside its role; placement arrangements are settled between the school and the South Dakota agency or preceptor. It does look for a program faculty member licensed in the state or practicing on a compact privilege. How that fits indirect DNP hours is a question for Gonzaga.
Does the APRN Compact let a South Dakota NP practice in Wyoming?
Not yet. South Dakota is one of five states, with Delaware, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming, that have signed the APRN Compact, and it only starts working once a seventh state joins. Utah and Wyoming are both Gonzaga admission states, which makes the compact worth watching if you plan a move.
