Oklahoma nurses considering Gonzaga: programs, OBN rules and a preceptor credit
Oklahoma falls outside the western region Gonzaga draws on for its FNP and PMHNP master's tracks, which take residents of ten states only. An Oklahoma nurse with a master's can instead explore the online Post-Master's DNP, where practicum hours go into a project near home. Gonzaga confirms eligibility, so ask before you apply.

The Post-Master's DNP in brief
Gonzaga aims this online doctorate at master's-prepared nurses who practice in an advanced role or lead in nursing administration. Admission asks for a 3.3 master's GPA, an evidence-based practice course and recent graduate statistics. Its immersions happen online, with no campus visits required.
The practicum involves no direct patient care. You establish a site in NURS 700, write an individualized proposal with objectives for each practicum course, and complete indirect hours with an agency liaison who is unrelated to you, not a friend and outside your chain of command. Counting your MSN hours, the total reaches 1,000.
OBN rule 485:10-5-12 and out-of-state students
The Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) treats two groups differently. Schools elsewhere whose graduates would sit for a first nursing license must get the board's permission in advance. RNs enrolled in another state's APRN program skip that permission under 485:10-5-12(c), provided three things line up: the student holds an unrestricted right to work as an RN in Oklahoma, the supervising faculty member carries an Oklahoma license matching or exceeding the level of instruction, and the program satisfies OBN's APRN education standards.
The Post-Master's DNP fits neither group: it prepares no one for a first license and is not an APRN program. Ask Gonzaga how it treats an Oklahoma project site. On licensing, Oklahoma entered the Nurse Licensure Compact when the updated version began in January 2018, while the separate APRN Compact has not been enacted there.
A preceptor tax credit, and whom it reaches
HB 3351, passed in 2024, set up Oklahoma's Preceptor Tax Credit Program. The income tax credit goes to physicians, PAs and APRNs with Oklahoma licenses who practice primary care there and teach medical, PA or APRN students. A rotation means 160 hours in total, one preceptor may count at most ten rotations annually, and claims are honored in the order received until funding runs out. Oklahoma's workforce training commission administers it and was accepting 2026 applications. Unused credit cannot be refunded but carries forward five years, and the program covers tax years 2026 through 2035.
Restricted practice and where projects could run
AANP groups Oklahoma with the restricted states. There, NP prescriptive authority requires physician supervision for 6,240 hours, recorded in a written statement, and Schedule II drugs are excluded. Health care centers on Oklahoma City, a metro of about 1.5 million, and Tulsa, about 1.1 million. Among the larger employers are OU Health (the University of Oklahoma's academic system), INTEGRIS Health, SSM Health St. Anthony, Hillcrest HealthCare System and Saint Francis Health System, and the Oklahoma State Department of Health handles statewide work. Each makes its own call on hosting.
Heading west later
NP training starts with a relocation. From an address inside the ten, the FNP or PMHNP application is open to you, and practicums follow that state's licensing. Plan on Spokane trips too: FNP students have six immersions and PMHNP students five, and residents beyond the four site-visit states add a campus day per practicum course. Can I apply to Gonzaga's online FNP program from Tulsa?
Not while you live in Oklahoma. Both NP tracks and the Second MSN require residence in one of ten western states, a region running from Alaska and Washington south to Arizona. Moving to one of them would let you apply as its resident.
Would my DNP liaison qualify for Oklahoma's preceptor tax credit?
Check before counting on it. The credit is for primary care clinicians licensed in Oklahoma, meaning physicians, PAs and APRNs, who teach medical, PA or APRN students in 160-hour rotations. A Gonzaga DNP liaison supports indirect project hours instead, so ask the Commission that runs the program before assuming eligibility.
What license does Oklahoma expect of a visiting APRN student?
Rule 485:10-5-12(c) asks that an RN in another state's APRN program hold an unrestricted right to practice nursing in Oklahoma, and that the supervising faculty hold an Oklahoma license as well. Because Oklahoma belongs to the compact, nurses holding a multistate license from another member state may practice there. For a Gonzaga DNP project, ask the program how it reads the rule.
How long does the Post-Master's DNP take?
Gonzaga's overview gives 7 to 8 semesters on average, while its course page says about two years, and credit totals range from 28 to 34 depending on the source. Project courses are not offered in summer, which shapes the pace. Your plan also depends on how many practicum hours your MSN already supplies.
