From Fargo to Minot: what Gonzaga offers a North Dakota nurse
Only residents of ten western states can enter Gonzaga's FNP and PMHNP tracks, and North Dakota's western neighbor, Montana, is the closest of them. For a nurse staying in North Dakota, the Gonzaga program worth asking about is the online Post-Master's DNP, where practicum time is project work at an organization you propose. Gonzaga confirms whether a North Dakota address qualifies.

Doctoral study with a North Dakota project site
Nurses with a master's in nursing who practice in advanced roles or in leadership are the audience for Gonzaga's online Post-Master's DNP. Its practice hours are indirect, spent on a DNP project rather than with patients. NURS 700, in the first semester, is where the host organization gets settled around a practice gap you identify, and the three DNP practicum courses after it rely on an agency liaison there.

NDBON distance recognition and its lead times
The North Dakota Board of Nursing's recognition process for distance education reaches any program sending students into North Dakota facilities on the way to a first license as an LPN, an RN or an APRN, which pulls NP programs in. Programs apply 60 days ahead of the first student activity, and graduate programs pay a yearly fee. After recognition the paperwork repeats every semester before students arrive: who is coming and on what license, which facilities and courses, the preceptors and faculty with their resumes and licenses, the affiliation agreements, and a statement from each facility that it has room for the student.
North Dakota's nurse practice act separately excuses students in a recognized program from another state, provided the board is told in writing and a clinical site can take them. The State Board of Higher Education must also authorize or exempt any degree-granting college teaching North Dakota students, and NDBON accepts NC-SARA approval as proof; Gonzaga is an NC-SARA participant. Since the doctorate adds no license, ask Gonzaga how these steps apply before you choose a North Dakota setting.
Two compacts and full practice
North Dakota implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact in January 2018. In March 2021 it also enacted the APRN Compact, one of five states to do so with Delaware, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. On AANP's map, North Dakota NPs have full practice.
Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot
North Dakota's care is concentrated in four metros: Fargo, with about 202,000 residents on the North Dakota side, Bismarck with about 140,000, and Minot and Grand Forks at roughly 75,000 each. Grand Forks centers on Altru and Minot on Trinity Health. Bismarck has CHI St. Alexius Health as well as Sanford Medical Center Bismarck, and Fargo has Sanford Broadway Medical Center plus Essentia Health-Fargo, part of a system spanning Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. The Department of Health and Human Services covers statewide public health. Each decides whether a doctoral project fits its plans.
Montana is the neighbor that changes the answer
Montana is next door, and it is one of the four states where Gonzaga's faculty visit students at their clinical sites. Move there and you could submit an FNP or PMHNP application as a Montana resident, with practicums under a license valid in Montana and site visits in place of an extra Spokane day. Questions Gonzaga students ask
Can I take Gonzaga's FNP program online from Bismarck?
Not while North Dakota is your home. Gonzaga's two NP tracks, and the Second MSN, accept residents of ten western states only. Montana is the nearest, and settling there would let you apply as a Montana resident.
Does NDBON's distance recognition cover a DNP project?
NDBON built its recognition process around programs that prepare students for a first LPN, RN or APRN license. The Post-Master's DNP prepares you for none of those, and the board does not describe post-licensure programs as covered. The notice and higher-education authorization rules reach more broadly, so ask Gonzaga to confirm its approach before your project starts.
Would moving to Montana mean in-person faculty visits?
For NP students, yes. Gonzaga's FNP pages promise Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana residents at least one clinical faculty visit per practicum course at the site itself. The other six admitted states handle the visit through an extra campus day in Spokane tied to an immersion.
Does North Dakota's APRN Compact help a Gonzaga student?
Not yet. North Dakota passed the APRN Compact in March 2021, yet the agreement stays dormant until a seventh state signs, and only five had enacted it as of 2026. Multistate APRN practice is unavailable in the meantime. The RN-level Nurse Licensure Compact, in force in North Dakota since 2018, is a separate agreement.
