Where Iowa sits on Gonzaga's admission map
Gonzaga ties its nurse practitioner master's to the West: applicants must live in one of ten states from Alaska to Arizona, and every NP practicum happens in the state of the student's license. Iowa appears as "Meets" on Gonzaga's licensure table for the NP master's, a determination about licensure that leaves the admission list unchanged. Iowa's expectations for outside programs, and its practice rules
Iowa's Board of Nursing approves no nursing program based outside the state. Even so, its page on programs based elsewhere lists duties that follow any school whose students or faculty work in Iowa.
Duties Iowa assigns to outside programs
- Clearance from Iowa College Aid, the state bureau that authorizes schools to operate in Iowa
- Following Iowa law alongside the rules of the program's own state
- Handing the Board data when it requests it
- Faculty and preceptors working in Iowa holding Iowa or multistate licensure
- Written clinical contracts that spell out each side's duties, keep faculty in charge of learning, and cover yearly review and termination
A licensed nurse studying at the graduate level in an Iowa clinical setting needs a license valid in Iowa, whether Iowa's own or multistate, and works under Iowa Code; program and facility sign off on preceptors jointly. Before you name an Iowa organization for a DNP project, ask Gonzaga how these duties apply.
Iowa's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018. AANP's practice map shades Iowa full practice, so no physician agreement is mandated for NPs, and the APRN Compact is not law in Iowa.
For ARNP programs, rule 616.16 in chapter 481 of the Iowa Administrative Code expects most preceptorship time with someone sharing the student's role and population focus, an ARNP or a physician, under written agreements renewed yearly.
A Gonzaga DNP project from Des Moines or Iowa City
The Post-Master's DNP is online, for nurses who hold a nursing master's plus an RN license and, where it applies, an APRN license and national certification. Your project runs inside an organization with an agency liaison, counted as indirect care hours toward a 1,000-hour total that includes your MSN hours.
Candidate settings span the state: UnityPoint Health's network, University of Iowa Health Care, MercyOne, and Iowa HHS for public health work. The Des Moines-West Des Moines metro counts 758,539 residents, Cedar Rapids 279,285 and Iowa City 182,711, and the Iowa part of the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro holds 175,259 (Census, 2025). These are examples, not organizations with a Gonzaga agreement.
Relocating west before an FNP or PMHNP application
Iowa nurses drawn to the FNP or PMHNP track would relocate first, because admission turns on western residency. The practical questions follow from there: whether your destination honors multistate licenses (four of the ten, including California and Oregon, do not), and whether it falls inside the Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana region where clinical faculty travel to your site. Is Gonzaga's online FNP open to Iowa residents?
Admission to the FNP and PMHNP tracks follows residency in Gonzaga's ten western states, and every practicum runs under your license in that state. Iowa is outside that group. An Iowa nurse with a master's can ask Gonzaga about the Post-Master's DNP, which lists no residency limit.
Does the Iowa Board of Nursing approve Gonzaga?
No. The Iowa board approves no program based outside Iowa, but it does set duties for outside schools: clearance from Iowa College Aid, compliance with Iowa law, data on request, properly licensed faculty and preceptors, and written clinical contracts. Do I need an Iowa license for clinical work in Iowa as a graduate student?
Iowa asks licensed nurses studying in its clinical settings to carry a license valid in Iowa, whether Iowa's own or multistate. Because Iowa belongs to the compact, the multistate license your compact home state issued qualifies. Iowa Code 152.1 exempts students with no nursing license at all, so that exemption does not help an RN, LPN or ARNP.
Do Iowa nurses get anything for precepting?
Iowa lets precepting count at license renewal: 6 contact hours for teaching a nursing student through an organized preceptorship lasting at least 60 hours, documented by the school. Gonzaga's own thank-yous to preceptors include DynaMed Plus access, a certificate verifying precepting hours, awards, and a path to adjunct faculty roles.
