Studying with Gonzaga from Alabama: what fits, and what the ABN asks
Gonzaga limits its online MSN nurse practitioner tracks to residents of ten western states, and Alabama is not among them. From Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile or Montgomery, the online Post-Master's DNP deserves a look; its practicum is a project you run with an agency liaison, often close to home. Gonzaga itself settles whether an Alabama resident qualifies, so put that question to the program early.

Gonzaga's licensure disclosures add an Alabama detail: the NP master's is recorded as "Does not meet" for this state. That matters most if you hope to train in the West and later come home to practice as an NP, so raise it with Gonzaga early. The state authorization guide explains the table.
The Post-Master's DNP from an Alabama address
Gonzaga aimed this online doctorate at nurses who finished a nursing master's and now practice as nurse practitioners, anesthetists, midwives or clinical nurse specialists, or who lead teams. Its two immersions are virtual. Practicum time is indirect care logged toward your DNP project, and Gonzaga credits what you logged in your MSN against a 1,000-hour target, wanting 340 or more inside the doctorate.

Alabama Board of Nursing rules that touch a DNP project
The ABN's out-of-state rule, 610-X-3-.09, asks a school based elsewhere that offers prelicensure or advanced practice education to file with the board before its students begin clinical learning in Alabama. The filing, sent 15 or more days ahead, lists each student with a license number, the supervising clinician, the facility, and a sign-off from its chief nursing officer. A yearly per-program fee comes with it.
On licenses, the ABN's FAQ reaches post-licensure learners too, DNP students among them: clinical work in Alabama for such a program calls for an Alabama RN license in good standing or a compact multistate license. Alabama's compact membership dates to January 2020. Whether project hours count as clinical learning under the filing rule is for Gonzaga to decide before you name an Alabama setting.
Practice climate, project settings and a tax credit
Alabama lands in AANP's reduced practice category. An Alabama NP works under a regulated collaborative arrangement with a physician, and the nursing and medical boards regulate NP practice together. The APRN Compact has not passed here. That joint oversight is itself a practice question a DNP project could study.
Possible project homes run from UAB Medicine in Birmingham to Baptist Health in Montgomery, with Huntsville Hospital Health System up north, both USA Health and Infirmary Health in Mobile, and the Alabama Department of Public Health statewide. Hosting is their choice; approving the plan is Gonzaga's.
Alabama also offers preceptors a state income tax credit, known as APTIP, for unpaid community-based teaching in rural underserved areas. Only rotations tied to programs located inside Alabama qualify, which leaves Gonzaga students outside it.
If you are planning a move west
Relocating reopens the NP question. A western address inside Gonzaga's list is the entry ticket for the FNP or PMHNP track, and every practicum then runs under the license of that new state. Start with the ten-state rule, then read the license guide. Current students weighing a move should check with the program first, because Gonzaga notes that changing states mid-program could affect licensure eligibility.

Can I do Gonzaga's online FNP program while living in Alabama?
Not while Alabama is home. The catalog admits FNP and PMHNP applicants, Second MSN ones too, only if they reside in the ten listed western states, and Gonzaga's disclosures give Alabama a "Does not meet" for the NP master's. Nurses who relocate first apply as residents of their new state.
Does Alabama's out-of-state filing apply to a Gonzaga DNP project?
The filing and yearly fee are written for schools offering prelicensure or advanced practice education, while the Post-Master's DNP is a post-licensure program built on indirect project hours. The ABN FAQ does apply its license condition to DNP students. Ask Gonzaga how it handles Alabama before you commit to a setting there.
Could a Birmingham hospital be my DNP practicum site?
You could propose one. A large academic system such as UAB Medicine, or a county or state public health office, can offer the kind of practice gap a DNP project tackles. The organization has to agree to host you, your liaison has to satisfy Gonzaga's checklist, and the proposal needs Gonzaga's approval. This guide names systems as examples, not as Gonzaga partners.
Would my Alabama liaison qualify for the state preceptor tax credit?
No. APTIP credits only rotations that support programs physically based in Alabama, and Gonzaga is in Spokane, Washington. The credit rewards unpaid community-based preceptors working in rural parts of Alabama with too few clinicians.
