Wisconsin nurses weighing Gonzaga: the disclosure rating, Board approval and a doctoral path
Gonzaga rates its nurse practitioner MSN "Does not meet" for Wisconsin, and its FNP and PMHNP tracks admit residents of ten western states only. From Milwaukee, Madison or Green Bay, Gonzaga's doctoral option, the online Post-Master's DNP, is the one to raise with admissions. Wisconsin's entry in Gonzaga's licensure disclosures
On Gonzaga's disclosure table, Wisconsin is one of a handful of states where the nurse practitioner MSN carries a "Does not meet" rating, Gonzaga's finding on whether the program satisfies the state's educational requirements for licensure. It matters most if you picture training in the West and then practicing as an NP back in Wisconsin. The state authorization guide lays out the table.

Project hours instead of patient panels
Gonzaga admits master's-prepared nurses to the Post-Master's DNP, whether they practice as advanced practice nurses or run nursing departments. Teaching is online. Practicum time is indirect, spent on the doctoral project, and the program's 1,000-hour count folds in the hours from your MSN.
You identify a community practice gap in NURS 700, establish a site with an agency liaison, and submit an individualized proposal for each of NURS 701, NURS 702 and NURS 703. Board approval under N 1.06
Wisconsin writes graduate programs into its approval rule. Administrative Code N 1.06 governs schools of nursing from other states, and the Department of Safety and Professional Services application, form 3067-OEE, requires Wisconsin Board of Nursing approval for them at the practical, associate, bachelor's and graduate levels. Approved schools then submit a self-evaluation for continued approval, and faculty and preceptors in Wisconsin clinicals must be licensed in Wisconsin or practice there on a compact privilege.
Gonzaga decides whether its doctoral project hours trigger that rule, so raise it before you name a Wisconsin organization in a proposal.
The 2026 APRN law and possible project homes
Wisconsin entered the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2018. AANP still lists reduced practice, with each NP in a collaborative relationship with a physician, and flags 2025 Wisconsin Act 17, effective September 1, 2026. Under the act, DSPS licenses APRNs in four roles, has moved existing APNP licenses over to APRN, and allows independent practice only through a separate application the Board approves. Rolling out a new practice law could itself anchor a DNP project.
Froedtert ThedaCare Health is one candidate organization; UW Health, Ascension Wisconsin and Aspirus Health are others, as is Aurora Health Care within Advocate Health, and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services works at the state level. Most residents live around Milwaukee-Waukesha, Madison, Green Bay or Appleton. Each organization makes its own hosting decision, and none appears here because of any tie to Gonzaga.
Moving to the ten western states first
For the FNP or PMHNP track, you need a home in one of the ten western states before applying. From there, practicums follow your license, and Spokane immersions number six on the FNP side and five for PMHNP students. Keep the Wisconsin rating in mind if you plan to return here to practice, and contact Gonzaga before moving if you are already enrolled.

No. Gonzaga's NP tracks are reserved for residents of the western ten. Gonzaga's disclosures also mark Wisconsin "Does not meet" for the nurse practitioner MSN, which matters to anyone hoping to train out west and return to Wisconsin as an NP. Discuss both points with Gonzaga before planning around the MSN.
Does Gonzaga need Wisconsin Board approval for my DNP project?
Form 3067-OEE, Wisconsin's application for schools based in other states, requires Board approval and names graduate-level programs among those covered. How that applies to indirect DNP project hours is a question Gonzaga answers for its own program, so ask before you commit to a Wisconsin organization.
What changed for Wisconsin NPs on September 1, 2026?
The state's new APRN law, 2025 Wisconsin Act 17, came into force. DSPS licenses APRNs in four roles: nurse practitioner, certified registered nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist and certified nurse midwife. Existing APNP licenses were converted to APRN, and an APRN seeking to practice independently must file a separate application for Board approval.
Can my UW Health colleague be my DNP liaison?
Possibly, if the organization agrees to host the project and the liaison meets Gonzaga's checklist: no family or friendship ties to you, no reporting relationship, at least three contacts a semester and an end-of-course evaluation. Your practicum hours must also stay outside your own work area and paid time.
