Gonzaga from an Ohio address: the DNP, Ohio law and a path west
Gonzaga reserves its FNP and PMHNP master's tracks for residents of ten western states, so an Ohio nurse cannot enter them from home. The program worth raising with Gonzaga is the online Post-Master's DNP; its practicum hours go into a project at an organization you propose. Check with Gonzaga that your address qualifies.

What each program means for an Ohio resident
- MSN FNP and MSN PMHNP: limited to residents of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and Wyoming, with practicums wherever your RN license is held.
- Second MSN (FNP or PMHNP): identical residency terms and the same practicum courses.
- Post-Master's DNP: online, no residency limit on its pages, and a practicum of indirect project work; Gonzaga confirms eligibility.
- BSN and Accelerated BSN: Spokane-based pre-licensure programs.
Gonzaga's disclosure table carries a "Meets" line for Ohio on the NP master's. That is a licensing determination, separate from the question of who may enroll, as the authorization page explains.
How the DNP practicum works from an Ohio home base
Gonzaga's Post-Master's DNP suits APRNs and nurse leaders who already hold a master's in nursing. Its practicum courses, NURS 701 through NURS 703, count indirect hours toward a DNP project, and NURS 704 extends the time when you need more to reach 1,000 hours with your MSN hours included.
An employer can double as your project site when the work happens away from your own unit and off the clock, and when the liaison is someone other than your boss. The DNP practicum courses page details each stage, and the DNP program page covers admission.
What Ohio law says about visiting students
Ohio's nursing statute contains no approval or notification requirement aimed at schools from other states. Ohio Revised Code 4723.32 instead exempts students from programs approved elsewhere. Its APRN provision covers students whose program leads to national certification or to a qualifying master's or doctoral degree, provided they work under the program's auspices and are supervised by an APRN acting for the program, whether as faculty, a teaching assistant or a preceptor.
That APRN supervision condition is worth knowing for an Ohio DNP project. Whether it reaches indirect project hours, and what the Ohio Department of Higher Education expects of out-of-state schools, are both questions for Gonzaga before you settle on an Ohio setting.
Compact license, reduced practice
Ohio has been a compact state since the first day of 2023, and its board keeps reporting on nurses practicing in Ohio under multistate licenses from other states. The APRN Compact has not been adopted. AANP rates Ohio as reduced practice: every NP works under a standard care arrangement with a collaborating physician or podiatrist for an entire career, and settings limit Schedule II prescribing.
Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Dayton
Ohio has four metros above 800,000 people: Columbus and Cleveland each near 2.2 million, the Ohio side of Cincinnati at about 1.8 million, and Dayton at about 830,000. In Columbus the big names are OhioHealth and Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center; Cleveland has Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals; Cincinnati is home to Bon Secours Mercy Health. The Ohio Department of Health fits population-level projects. Hosting a doctoral student is each organization's own decision.
Planning a move west
Residency is what opens the NP tracks. Relocate to one of the ten and you become eligible to apply from there, finishing practicums in person under a license that state recognizes. Six of those states, Arizona and Utah among them, pair each practicum course with a one-day Spokane trip beside an immersion for the faculty visit. Questions Gonzaga students ask
Can I enroll in Gonzaga's online FNP track from Ohio?
Not with an Ohio address. Living in one of ten western states is Gonzaga's entry condition for both NP tracks and for the Second MSN, and Ohio's "Meets" line on the disclosure table does not alter it. Relocate to one of the ten first, and you would apply as a resident of that state.
Does Ohio require approval before a Gonzaga student trains here?
No. Ohio's statute skips any board approval or notification for schools from other states. ORC 4723.32 instead exempts qualifying students who practice under their program's auspices with the right supervision. A DNP project built on indirect hours is a different kind of activity, so confirm Gonzaga's approach before you choose an Ohio setting.
Could Cleveland Clinic host my DNP project?
Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals or OhioHealth could all appear in a proposal, though each makes its own hosting decisions and none is named here as a Gonzaga partner. Gonzaga still checks the liaison against its checklist and reviews the individualized practicum proposal you submit for each course.
What is Gonzaga's DNP System Management concentration?
It is a DNP option the catalog lists as coming in Fall 2027: 33 credits that pair the DNP practicum and project courses with MBUS business courses and two of the DNP core courses. It may suit Ohio nurses in leadership roles who want business study alongside the project. Check the catalog for its current status.
