A Maine nurse looking at Gonzaga: the MSN restriction, the DNP question and Maine's rules
Gonzaga's disclosures give Maine a specific note: the NP master's "Meets" Maine's requirements, but MSN students from Maine cannot currently be accepted. The NP tracks, besides, draw only on ten western states. The online Post-Master's DNP is a separate degree whose pages set no residency limit, which makes it the Gonzaga option worth a direct question from Portland or Bangor.

Maine's line on Gonzaga's disclosures
Gonzaga's NP licensure table marks Maine "Meets," then attaches a note: for now, Gonzaga is not in a position to take MSN students from Maine. Nine other jurisdictions share that note, Maryland and Massachusetts among them. Where the doctorate fits
The Maine note names MSN students, and the Post-Master's DNP is a doctorate built for nurses with a master's in nursing. Gonzaga's DNP pages list no state of residence requirement, which is why eligibility for Maine is worth confirming directly with Gonzaga rather than assumed either way.
To be admitted you bring your RN license (plus APRN licensure and board certification if your role carries them), a 3.3 GPA from your master's, coursework in evidence-based practice and graduate statistics from the last five years. The program runs online with virtual immersions. Its practicum is indirect care work on your DNP project, overseen by an agency liaison in the organization you propose.
Maine's board and a project in Maine
Research found nothing from Maine's nursing board, in rules or guidance, on out-of-state programs using Maine clinical sites. Chapter 7, the Board's rule on education, is about approving Maine's own prelicensure schools; placements by outside programs go unmentioned.
The Nurse Practice Act carves out practice by students in Board-approved programs that lead to a first license, which describes a prelicensure student rather than a licensed nurse in doctoral study. Maine joined the compact on January 19, 2018, so ask Gonzaga and the Board which license your project work calls for.
Practice and settings from Portland to Bangor
AANP rates Maine full practice, with a two-year runway: new NPs first log 24 months or more of supervised practice with a physician or NP, or work for a clinic or hospital whose medical director is a physician. The APRN Compact has not been enacted.
Portland-South Portland is the largest metro at 577,635 residents, then Bangor (157,967) and Lewiston-Auburn (116,487), per 2025 Census estimates. MaineHealth, Northern Light Health, Central Maine Healthcare and MaineGeneral Health carry much of the state's care, and the Maine CDC handles public health. These are possible project settings, not organizations with a Gonzaga agreement.
Considering a move west
Relocation is the path to the FNP and PMHNP tracks, since Gonzaga considers only western residents for them. Maine's compact membership carries weight in Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona and Washington; the RN license for clinicals guide explains what changes when your home state does. Choosing the Northwest four brings clinical faculty to your site, while the rest of the ten add a trip to Spokane. Current students should talk with Gonzaga before any move.

Why can't Gonzaga accept MSN students from Maine?
Gonzaga's disclosures page states the restriction without giving a reason. Its table marks Maine "Meets" for the NP master's and then limits MSN admission from the state. The word "currently" suggests the position can change, so check the disclosures page and ask Graduate Admissions for the latest.
Can a Maine nurse apply to Gonzaga's Post-Master's DNP?
The Maine note refers to MSN students, and the DNP pages list no residency limit, so the doctorate is the Gonzaga program to ask about. It requires a nursing master's already in hand. Confirm eligibility for Maine with Gonzaga before you apply, since admission decisions rest with the university.
Does the Maine State Board of Nursing regulate out-of-state programs placing students?
Research found no Maine rule or guidance on out-of-state clinical placements. Chapter 7 deals only with approving Maine's own prelicensure schools, and the Board's education pages link to nothing on outside programs. Gonzaga remains the deciding voice on where its DNP students may complete project hours.
Is Maine a full practice state for nurse practitioners?
Yes, per AANP, after a transition. Independence comes once an NP has spent 24 or more months practicing with supervision from a physician or another NP, or employed where a physician serves as medical director. Maine is in the Nurse Licensure Compact; the APRN Compact is not law there.
