Alaska registers the student, not the school

Where most western boards judge an outside program as a whole, Alaska works student by student. Its Board of Nursing keeps no roster of approved outside NP programs; under 12 AAC 44.460 it instead registers every student whose APRN program is headquartered in another state, and its FAQ tells those students to file for a preceptorship with the Board themselves.

The paperwork is the Board's form 08-4253 (APRN Preceptorship Registration), which carries a nonrefundable fee.

What the Board wants in the file

• Your RN license, from Alaska or from elsewhere, in good standing
• Evidence that you are enrolled in the APRN program right now
• The preceptorship agreement itself: a signed copy binding the school, the facility, the preceptor and you

Each registration lapses at twelve months or at the close of that preceptorship, whichever comes first, and one renewal is permitted. Since the signed agreement is part of the file, registering is one of the last steps before your first Alaska hour, not one of the first.

Anchorage, Mat-Su and Fairbanks as practicum settings

The Anchorage metro area held 405,821 people in 2025, with 287,155 in the municipality and 118,666 in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough; the Fairbanks-College metro added 93,972. Shortage designations run deep. HRSA lists 329 primary care shortage areas statewide, 278 of them tribal or IHS facility designations, and counts 20 primary care and 20 mental health designations touching Anchorage. The systems below are examples of where a practicum could happen, each with its own published process.

• Southcentral Foundation's Nuka Learning Program: Primary Care accepts nurse practitioner students, and OB-GYN NP rotations can combine clinic and inpatient care. Open enrollment runs through February and is described as highly competitive, with other requests weighed case by case. A Learner Rotation Request comes with a letter of intent, a CV and course objectives.
• Providence Alaska Medical Center: the system's Alaska pages describe a Student Request Form, a Clinical Education Agreement with the school, and a State of Alaska background check.
• Alaska Regional Hospital: its student pages describe NP students being coordinated through Medical Staff Services, and nursing clinicals limited to two Alaska schools.
• Smaller hospitals and clinics: in Palmer, Mat-Su Regional's pages list volunteer roles only, and in Fairbanks, Foundation Health Partners runs Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Tanana Valley Clinic; neither published an NP student process on the pages reviewed.
