North Carolina nurses and Gonzaga's graduate programs
Gonzaga's nurse practitioner master's tracks take students only from ten western states, and its disclosure table lists North Carolina as "Does not meet" for that program. What remains open for discussion is the online Post-Master's DNP, a doctorate whose practicum is project work in a setting you choose. Confirm with Gonzaga that a North Carolina address qualifies before applying.

"Does not meet" is Gonzaga's licensure determination for its MSN nurse practitioner program in North Carolina. It matters to anyone who pictures training in the West and coming back to practice here as an NP. The state authorization page explains how the determinations work.
The online doctorate: indirect hours, online immersions
Gonzaga designed its Post-Master's DNP for master's-prepared nurses in advanced practice roles or in leadership and administration. Courses are online, and the DNP FAQ says no campus visits are required, with two immersions held online; an older catalog page still describes them as on campus. Credit totals also vary by source, from 28 to 34, so read the current catalog.
Practicum hours are indirect and serve your DNP project. You establish a site in NURS 700, work with a liaison through NURS 701 to NURS 703, and use the repeatable NURS 704 if you need more time to reach 1,000 hours, a figure that includes your MSN hours. What NCBON oversees, and what it leaves to schools
The North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) is direct about its reach: graduate programs for nurses who are already licensed, in North Carolina or anywhere else, are not programs it approves or rejects, and the same goes for RN-BSN and doctoral study. The rule it applies to visiting schools, 21 NCAC 36 .0233, is aimed at unlicensed pre-licensure students; there the North Carolina host agency files the approval request with the board 30 or more days before the first clinical day.
Graduate students get one practical instruction: if you hold neither a North Carolina license nor a multistate one, ask the board's Licensure Department what a clinical experience in the state requires. The state entered SARA in mid-2016, and NCBON says a student at a SARA college may qualify for field placements in North Carolina while studying with that school; Gonzaga participates in NC-SARA.
Licensing and NP practice in North Carolina
North Carolina implemented the current Nurse Licensure Compact in January 2018, so its RN licenses can be multistate. It has not adopted the APRN Compact. On AANP's map it is a restricted state: an NP's physician agreement lasts the whole career, and NP licensing belongs to a joint subcommittee drawn from the nursing and medical boards.
Charlotte, the Triangle and the Triad as project ground
Charlotte's Atrium Health, now within Advocate Health, sits alongside UNC Health, Duke Health, Novant Health and ECU Health among the state's largest systems, and the NCDHHS Division of Public Health runs statewide programs. The Charlotte metro holds nearly 2.5 million people on the North Carolina side and Raleigh-Cary about 1.6 million, while Greensboro-High Point and Winston-Salem together add about 1.5 million. Any of these could anchor a DNP project if it agrees to take you on, subject to Gonzaga's review of the proposal.
A western move and the NP tracks
Relocation is what reopens the FNP and PMHNP tracks. Once one of the ten western states is home, you apply as its resident and complete in-person practicums under its license. Faculty visit your clinical site in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana; in the other six, every practicum course brings one extra Spokane day next to an immersion. Is Gonzaga's online PMHNP program open to North Carolina nurses?
Not to North Carolina residents. Residence in one of ten western states, Alaska to Arizona, is a condition of entry for the FNP and PMHNP tracks in Gonzaga's catalog, and the Second MSN carries the same condition. Moving to one of those states first would let you apply from there.
Does NCBON have to approve a Gonzaga DNP project in North Carolina?
NCBON leaves post-licensure graduate programs outside its approval work, and its rule for visiting schools targets pre-licensure students. A graduate student licensed neither in North Carolina nor through the compact is told to check with the board's Licensure Department. Gonzaga should still confirm its approach before you commit to a site.
What does "Does not meet" mean for a North Carolina nurse?
It is Gonzaga's determination that its NP master's does not meet North Carolina's educational requirements for NP licensure. Residents cannot enter the NP tracks from here anyway, but the note matters if you moved west, earned the degree and later hoped to return and seek NP licensure in North Carolina.
How many DNP practicum hours will I need?
Gonzaga sets 1,000 post-baccalaureate practicum hours, counting the hours from your MSN, and at least 340 must be earned inside the DNP. Your exact number depends on your master's program, which is why Gonzaga asks for an hours verification form at admission. If you fall short, the repeatable NURS 704 extension supplies more practicum time.
