Gonzaga's licensure disclosure table marks New Mexico "Meets" for the MSN nurse practitioner program. That line describes licensing requirements rather than admission, so the residency list stays as it is. The ten-state rule page sets it out in Gonzaga's words.
A doctorate you can pursue from Albuquerque or Las Cruces
Gonzaga's online doctorate is open to nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists and nurse-midwives with a nursing master's, and to master's-prepared nurse leaders. Its practice hours are indirect, logged on your DNP project instead of in patient care. Your MSN hours already count toward the 1,000 Gonzaga requires, with a minimum of 340 completed during the doctorate.
NURS 700, in your first semester, is where you spot a gap in local practice and secure the organization that will host the project. From NURS 701 onward an agency liaison there supports the work; relatives, friends and anyone in your reporting line are ruled out. The DNP practicum courses page walks through each stage.
NMBON and the more-than-one-semester trigger
The New Mexico Board of Nursing (NMBON) wants a clinical placement application from any program whose clinical or field placements here stretch past a single semester. Schools approved by a board elsewhere must also satisfy the standards of 16.12.3.12 NMAC, and those standards carry New Mexico's own preceptor definition: two or more years as a nurse, with a license that sits at or beyond the student's target level.
The rule lives in a chapter aimed at schools whose graduates seek a New Mexico license, and APRN or post-licensure programs get no separate mention. A DNP project spans several practicum courses, so the semester trigger deserves an early question. Gonzaga, not the student, settles whether indirect project hours count as field experience here, so raise it before a New Mexico setting goes into your proposal.
Compact license, full practice and possible project homes
Multistate licenses have come from NMBON since the updated Nurse Licensure Compact took effect on January 19, 2018, and a separate multistate fee started on June 1, 2026. The APRN Compact has no New Mexico enactment yet. AANP's map gives New Mexico NPs full practice.
Albuquerque's metro area holds about 925,000 people, several times the Las Cruces, Santa Fe or Farmington areas. A DNP project could take shape at Presbyterian Healthcare Services, at Lovelace, at the Santa Fe hospital run by CHRISTUS St. Vincent, or within UNM Health, home to New Mexico's single academic medical center; the New Mexico Department of Health suits population-level work. Hosting is each organization's decision.
Next door to Arizona and Utah
Two of Gonzaga's ten states touch New Mexico: Arizona along its western border and Utah at Four Corners. Establish residence in either and the NP tracks are open to your application, with practicums under that state's license. Neither sits in the four-state site-visit region, so students there travel to Spokane for one additional campus day, tied to an immersion, in every practicum course. Questions Gonzaga students ask
Can a New Mexico resident enroll in Gonzaga's online PMHNP program?
Not while New Mexico is home. The catalog ties FNP and PMHNP admission to living in one of ten western states, a condition the Second MSN shares. The "Meets" entry for New Mexico on the disclosure table leaves that condition untouched. A nurse who settles in Arizona or Utah first applies from there.
Is New Mexico board approval needed for a Gonzaga DNP project?
The trigger in New Mexico's rule is a clinical or field placement that runs beyond one semester, and the chapter holding it addresses schools preparing graduates for a New Mexico license. The Post-Master's DNP leads to no new license and uses indirect hours, so the answer is not obvious. Ask Gonzaga to confirm before you commit to a New Mexico setting.
Can my DNP project be at the Santa Fe hospital where I work?
Yes, within limits. Gonzaga lets DNP students use their employer, but project hours cannot sit in the part of the organization that employs you or overlap paid shifts, and your direct supervisor is not eligible as liaison. Gonzaga reviews the proposal either way.
Are Gonzaga's DNP immersions held in Spokane?
Gonzaga's current DNP pages list two online immersions and state that campus visits are not required; the 2026-27 catalog calls them virtual and ties them to NURS 700 in your first semester. One older catalog listing still describes the two as on campus, so check the format with the program before booking travel.
